Dermal filler treatments

Dermal fillers are injectable treatments which are used on the face to smooth out lines and wrinkles, replace volume and add definition. As such, they are popular with people seeking to rejuvenate ageing or tired skin. Dermal fillers such as those in the Juvederm® range contain the active ingredient hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally-occurring substance in our skin which, along with elastin and collagen, reduces over time leading to skin which appears wrinkled and saggy.

Dermal fillers offer an attractive solution. By replacing the hyaluronic acid in the skin, they help fill facial lines and wrinkles and add volume in a subtle but appreciable way. Dermal filler can also add lift to enhance the overall shape of the face, as well as introducing definition – by filling in lip lines, for example.

How dermal filler is used at Altruderm

Dermal fillers can be permanent or temporary, however at Altruderm we only use temporary fillers; this is because permanent fillers have been associated with more risks and complications. Temporary fillers are broken down over time by our body’s own natural enzymes but results can last anywhere between 4 to 18 months, depending on the product used and the area treated.

Scars

Dermal filler can be used to treat scars; if the scar is atrophic (depressed down) then it can be smoothed out with filler to give a more even appearance. We use a technique called subcision and a special needle called a Nokor™ needle to release the superficial skin from the tethered tissue beneath, allowing the scar to be elevated and supported with filler.

Face

Historically, fillers were used to soften characteristic lines of ageing, such as the nasolabial folds (so-called ‘laugh lines’) and marionette lines. This has largely been overtaken by targeted injections into fat pockets to produce natural lift and definition, with the practitioner assessing the face as a whole to achieve the best cosmetic outcome.Facial dermal filler injections are effective in treating a number of areas such as eyebrows, tear troughs, cheeks, chin and jawline.

Combination treatment of PDO Threads and Dermal Fillers at Altruderm
"This was a great result. We added contour to the cheeks, replaced lost volume, restored the jawline and minimised frown and lip lines with a combination treatment plan using Juvederm's Vycross range of dermal fillers alongside V Soft Lift PDO threads. Results achieved in as little as 4 months. "  -  Dr. Kieron McDaid
When treating the cheeks, the aim is to restore lost volume and add definition to the cheekbone. This can enhance the shape of the face. Injecting dermal filler into the chin is useful for treating the appearance of a recessed jaw (medically known as micrognathia) as well as filling in the mental crease in the chin (the line between the lower lip and the chin), which can become prominent with ageing. Filler can also be used to contour the lower jaw, improving the appearance of jowls. For men, treating this area in this way can help to sharpen and square-off the jawline if desired.

Lips

Dermal filler is an effective treatment for a variety of lip concerns including replacing lost volume, enhancing lip definition and filling in unwanted lines around the mouth. As we age, our lips become thinner, lose moisture and can be affected by sun damage. Our lips play a key role in portraying how we are feeling; after all, it is our smile which communicates our happiest emotion. We offer a range of dermal filler treatments in this area to successfully restore the shape, definition and volume of the lips to produce a natural-looking cosmetic outcome.

Skin Booster

Volite is an injectable treatment from Juvederm® designed to improve skin quality.  This Hyaluronic Acid (HA) gel works by drawing water into the skin to smooth out fine lines, improve hydration and increase elasticity.  Effective results last up to 6 months with just one treatment session.   Volite can be used to treat the face, neck, décolletage and hands and offers a solution for those patients concerned with improving the overall quality of their skin.  This treatment can be delivered on its own or combined with dermal filler treatments if the desired outcome is to lift and volumise as well as improve the quality of the skin.

FAQs

Am I suitable for fillers?
You will be required to have a consultation before any dermal filler treatment, during which time Dr. McDaid will take a detailed medical history and assess your suitability for the treatment. Dermal fillers should be deferred until after pregnancy and should be avoided by those who have had an adverse reaction to dermal fillers or local anaesthetic in the past; and they are not suitable for some people on certain medications, all of which will be discussed during your consultation.

Are the fillers permanent?
At Altruderm we only use temporary fillers, since permanent fillers are associated with more risks and complications.

Are dermal filler injections painful?
Dermal filler treatments are generally not painful, though the level of sensitivity depends on the area being treated; the lips and nose are considered to be more delicate compared to the rest of the face. Anaesthetic topical cream can be applied to numb the area being treated, thereby minimising any discomfort.

Is there any downtime?
Most people resume their normal day straight after treatment. There may be some bruising, swelling and/or redness at the area treated, but any associated pain should subside within 2 to 3 days. It is recommended you consult with a doctor if any of the side effects persist.

To discuss the dermal filler treatment options available to you, we recommend getting in touch to book a consultation with Dr. McDaid.
